Pinterest

I don’t use pinetrest is pretty cool.  My girlfriend has one and she was addicted there for a while.  But I think she’s faded out a little.  Pinterest did set the record about being the fastest site to pass the 10 million mark.  That’s definitely something for any web site to be proud of.  Will Pinterest stand on its own like Facebook and Twitter have? I really don’t know.  Stumbleupon was kind of the same thing in my opinion.  It was all over the internet and people would not stop “stumbling” and talking about it.  Then all of a sudden you look up, and no one really does it anymore.  People just either  got busy or lost interest or a combination of the two.  Looking at things is cool don’t get me wrong, but you can only look at things for so long before losing interest.  Facebook and Twitter are about people, and people are constantly changing and moving and learning and growing.  Stuff just stays stuff, and eventually stuff gets boring.  I know people that still use Pinterest and yes I have a limited opinion about it, but all I know is that my girlfriend has a twitter, facebook, and Pinterest.  She’s got a busy job  this semester at Disney world and she’s still on facebook and twitter all the time.  Pinterest has fallen off. That’s saying something.

Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s day is a mixed bagfor a lot of people.  Some couples do it real big.  They shell out dollars and go to fancy restaurants and buy jewelry etc.  I’ve never been that big in to Velentine’s day.  But now that I really think about it I have’t been in a relationship on Velentin’s day very much.  I don’t mean that in a depressing way at all. I gues I’m just more of a first semester/ summertime dater.  This year I am dating a girl during Valentines day, but she is in Disney World for an internship, so that doesn’t really count.  But we were dating last year during V-day also.  We had just started talking so we didn’t go all out or anything crazy like that.  She got me a Basketball with a cheesy poem since it’s my favorite sport, and she got me a basket with candy.  Solid gift I wasn’t about to complain.  I’ve never really gotten a “bad” gift.  I’m never gonna complain about getting something.

If I ran a gift store for Valentine’s day I would of course get the word out about my company with a big sign and opening.  But the key would be my catphrase.  somewhere outside my store would say in big letters “Gifts That Matter.”  People want to go to stores where they can find gifts that mean something whether it’s as big as a 10 year anniversary or as small as an inside joke.  Nobody wants to buy a gift that does not mean anything to anyone.

Social Media and PR

Social Media has made the Public Relations world much more accessible that’s for sure.  Everything is just a click away.  This is much different than “way back when” when people had to appear for press conferences and call up the reporters they know to give them a quick advance on a story or spin an event one way or the other.  Now CNN is quoting certain companies’ websites all the time.  According to Dr. so and so on Cocacola.com….blah blah blah.  Anyone who is anyone can have access to just about any information from just about anywhere.

I think this is both good and bad for PR.  I think it is good in the fact that if there is an emergency within the company, or a disaster happens that needs to be addressed, the Public Relations people can get to the root of the problem and put spin on it as soon as their fingers hit the keys.  A problem in Hong Kong can be solved in Montana in just minutes thanks to the internet.  The problem with that is addressed in this weeks question.  A lot of companies employ the use of social media, but do so without much of a background in Public Relations.  What is the point of having unlimited social media at your disposal if you do not have people with the means and wits to use it effectively.

Social media has definitely made things easier, that is for sure.  But without professional public relations practitioners involved, the whole thing could go to waste.
